1. Wash Your Clothes With Cold Water

This one is pretty easy – all you need to do is select the cold water setting. You won’t have to pay to heat the water for each load, so you’ll end up spending a lot less. Plus, it makes laundry day way easier. Since colors don’t bleed as easily with cold water, you don’t have to worry about separating your lights and darks. Just dump them all together and wash away. Sounds like a win-win, huh?

2. Get Better Bulbs

Fun fact: Using cheap bulbs isn’t always cheaper. Instead, go for the bulbs that have earned the Energy Star. You could save up to $45 a year! Plus, Energy Star LED bulbs last 15-25 times longer than traditional bulbs. So not only are they saving you money, but also time that could be much better spent.

3. Switch Up Your Chore Schedule

Most people use energy around the same time every day. Creatures of habit, you know? But when everyone is using energy at the same time, it creates high demand. Which means utility companies can charge you more during those times. So, if you can, shift your chore schedule. Many energy suppliers offer special deals during off-peak hours. If you want to know when your off-peak hours are, contact your energy supplier. (And while you’re at it, ask them if they’re offering any special deals or plans! You may be surprised.)

4. Turn Back The Thermostat While You’re Away

Did you know that you can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting? That could add up to hundreds of dollars! During the winter, set your thermostat to about 68°F while you’re awake. Then, when you’re sleeping or away from your home, set it lower. In the summer, do the opposite! Keep your house a little warmer than normal when you are out and only cool it down when you’re home.

5. Energy Star Appliances

Switching out your appliances for a more energy efficient option seems like it would cost a lot, but you’ll actually save money on utilities in the long run. For instance, if you replace your pre-1994 washer with an energy efficient model, you could save a lot on your utility bills. Take a look at your appliances and see if they’ve earned the Energy Star. If not, be sure to check out all of Aaron’s high-efficiency appliances!
