Memorial Day is a time of reflection and appreciation for all men and women who served our country. Let’s show our appreciation to our veterans, and celebrate the arrival of summer with family and friends with a weekend full of activities! Here are five ways to celebrate with local activities that won’t break the bank:

1.       Writing Cards for Veterans

One great way to honor veterans on Memorial Day is to create thank you cards! It’s a great opportunity to get your children involved, too. Here’s a helpful website with tips for writing the letters – and once they’re done, you can deliver them to your local VA center, a retirement home, or have them sent to a deployed troop overseas.

2.       Visit Local Museums and Monuments

Who doesn’t love a good discount? Veterans and active duty individuals may receive discounts on access to museums and monuments. Don’t have family in the military? You can still take a field trip with your family for some fun historical sightseeing – most museums have cheaper rates during the day and for children. Go on an adventure and explore!

3.       Backyards are for BBQs

Nothing says Memorial Day weekend like nice weather and grilling. Host a BBQ for cheap by making it a potluck! Cook up some of your favorite burgers, brats and hotdogs and ask your family and friends to bring the side dishes. For some budget-friendly BBQ tips, check out this article.

Also, remember that backyards aren’t the only place you can have a sweet Memorial Day BBQ. Community grills are usually available at apartment complexes or local parks, where you can post up for the day and relax with your loved ones.

4.       Attend Fun (and Free) Local Events

Sometimes you don’t have to look any further than your own town square for something to do during a holiday weekend! Check out what your local town or city has planned for Memorial Day and attend an event with your family! From live music to art festivals, it’s a great time to explore the neighborhood with your kiddos.

5.       Day At The Pool

Want to take advantage of the nice weather? Us too! Unpack your bathing suits, pack a few fun pool toys and simple snacks and get ready to spend a fun day poolside. While the kids enjoy themselves in the pool, you can enjoy the shade and a good book. It’s a win for the whole crew. Just don’t forget that sunblock!
